On August 4, 2026, Bijan Robinson became the highest-paid running back in NFL history. On August 6, he wasn’t. That is the whole story of the position’s economics in 48 hours: a record that arrived through a training-camp hold-in and was topped by a draft classmate before the ink was dry.

Robinson’s agreement with the Atlanta Falcons was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, per NFL.com. The Falcons announced it the next day. We could not open a team release with the terms, so the numbers below are as reported.

The Money

The deal is three years, running through 2030, per Yahoo Sports. It is worth up to $75 million, with a base value of $66.75 million, per NFL.com. Yahoo, citing the NFL, puts the average at $22.25 million a year, which topped Saquon Barkley’s $20.6 million. Yahoo lists the next three behind them: Christian McCaffrey at $19 million, De’Von Achane at $16 million and Derrick Henry at $15 million.

The guarantee is the headline. NFL.com and the National Football Post report $51 million guaranteed, $37 million of it at signing, and NFL.com calls that the most ever guaranteed to a running back on a non-rookie deal.

The new money doesn’t start right away. Atlanta had already picked up Robinson’s fifth-year option for 2027, per Yahoo and the National Football Post, so the extension covers the seasons after that.

The Hold-In

Robinson was already under contract for 2026, so there was no holdout. The National Football Post says he attended training camp but stayed on the sideline while the sides worked, a “hold-in.” Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski called it “very amicable,” per NFL.com.

It was one of several deals Atlanta did this offseason. NFL.com lists wide receiver Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts and guard Matthew Bergeron among the players who signed extensions in the roughly two months before Robinson’s.

The Case He Made

The 24-year-old was the No. 8 pick in 2023. In 2025 he led the NFL with 2,298 scrimmage yards, made his first All-Pro team and finished fourth in Offensive Player of the Year voting, per NFL.com. Through 51 career games, NFL.com counts 3,910 rushing yards, 198 catches and 34 touchdowns (25 rushing, nine receiving).

Two Days

The Detroit Lions then did the same thing for Jahmyr Gibbs, Robinson’s 2023 draft classmate. ESPN reported a three-year, $67.5 million extension worth up to $75.75 million, with $51.5 million guaranteed and a $22.5 million average, and the Associated Press headline called him the NFL’s newest highest-paid running back. Those are small steps past Robinson: $250,000 more a year on average, $500,000 more guaranteed and $750,000 more in base value. Sources differ slightly on the maximum, with the AP reporting up to $75.7 million and ESPN $75.75 million.

Yahoo Sports had flagged it in its report on Robinson’s deal: it noted that Gibbs was also holding in and that Robinson’s contract could help his negotiation. It did.

What We Don’t Know

The reports we opened do not detail Robinson’s incentives, which account for the gap between $66.75 million and $75 million. We did not check whether any running back has passed Gibbs since August. There is no reliable net-worth figure for Robinson and we won’t invent one. For where this deal sits against the rest of the sports contracts market, see the 2026 Sports Contracts Tracker.

The Bottom Line

Robinson got what the position almost never gets: a large guarantee, $51 million of it, for a back in his early years. The record itself was worth less than it looked, because running backs set a market together. Once one deal exists, the next team has a number to beat, and Detroit beat it by the smallest margin it could.
