Payton Pritchard's $44.2M Celtics Extension, Explained

On October 13, 2026, Payton Pritchard agreed to a $44.2 million extension that does not pay him a dollar more until the 2028-29 season. This year he makes $7.76 million, per Yahoo Sports. In two years, the same player is set to make $21.2 million. That is a raise of about 2.7 times, for a guard the Boston Celtics once couldn’t find minutes for.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the two-year deal, which the Boston Globe, Yahoo Sports and ClutchPoints all relayed. We could not open a Celtics release with the terms, so the numbers below are as reported.

The Money

The extension tacks two seasons onto what is already a long runway. Pritchard is playing out a four-year, $30 million deal he signed in October 2023, according to the Boston Globe. Yahoo Sports puts the two years left on it at $7.76 million this season and $8.3 million next. The new money begins after that.

Yahoo, citing cap analyst Bobby Marks, lists the extension at $21.2 million in 2028-29 and $22.9 million in 2029-30. Marks noted that the first-year figure is the most the rules allow. The total averages roughly $22 million a year.

The second season includes a mutual option, and outlets disagree on how it works. Yahoo, citing CelticsBlog, says either side can opt in; Boston Sports Journal, per the same article, says both must agree. The Globe says both he and the Celtics must decline it for him to become a free agent. Treat the second year as not locked.

Why Now

The deadline did the work. Yahoo Sports reports that Boston wanted the deal done before October 19, because a long-term extension could not be signed once the season started. The regular season opens October 20 in Detroit.

It also fits a pattern. Per Hoops Rumors, as relayed by Yahoo, Pritchard is the third Celtic to sign a veteran extension since the new league year began, after Neemias Queta (four years, $56 million) and Jordan Walsh (three years, $15.75 million).

The Arc

Danny Ainge drafted Pritchard 26th overall in 2020, the Globe reports. As a rookie he averaged 7.7 points in 19.2 minutes. His minutes and scoring fell in each of the next two seasons, and midway through his third season he asked for a trade. Brad Stevens, now running basketball operations, kept him and promised a larger role, per the Globe.

The role arrived. He played all 82 games in the 2023-24 championship season. In 2024-25 he averaged 14.3 points and 3.5 assists and won Sixth Man of the Year, per the Globe. Last season he set career highs of 17.0 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds, starting 50 of 79 games while shooting 46.4% from the field and 37.7% from three, per ClutchPoints. Boston won 56 games and took the East’s No. 2 seed.

Boston.com adds the durability case: he played 241 games from 2023 to 2026, tied for third-most in the league over that span, and is one of four Celtics with at least 200 three-pointers in multiple seasons, alongside Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and Antoine Walker.

What We Don’t Know

There is no reliable net-worth figure for Payton Pritchard, and we won’t invent one. The reports we opened gave no cap hit for this season beyond his salary, and outlets differ on the mutual option’s wording. Boston.com says the extension starts in 2027-28, while the Globe, Yahoo and ClutchPoints say 2028-29; since he is under contract through 2027-28, we use the latter. For where this deal sits against the league, see the 2026 Sports Contracts Tracker and the NBA salary cap explainer.

The Bottom Line

Pritchard’s contract is the opposite of a rookie-scale rush. Boston paid early for a player who was a trade request in 2023 and a Sixth Man of the Year two years later, and it locked in the price two seasons before it starts. His pay doesn’t move until 2028. His leverage already did.
