$40,806,150. That is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s salary for the 2026-27 season, per Basketball-Reference. The two-time reigning MVP ranks 39th in the NBA by pay this season.

That gap is temporary, and it is the key to understanding his money. Gilgeous-Alexander is in the last season of the rookie extension he signed in 2021. Next season his supermax starts at $61.0 million, and Basketball-Reference lists the four seasons of it at $273.3 million. His fortune today is estimated at $90 million by Celebrity Net Worth, on a page last updated September 8, 2026. Most of the money that will define it has not been paid yet.

What he earns in 2026

Forbes’ 2026 ranking of the highest-paid NBA players, published October 20, puts Gilgeous-Alexander at $70.8 million, tied for seventh with Jimmy Butler. That is his $40.8 million salary plus an estimated $30 million off the court. Forbes rounds off-court figures to the nearest $1 million and does not deduct taxes or agents’ fees.

Five players in Forbes’ top ten earn more off the court: Stephen Curry ($141 million), LeBron James ($90 million), Kevin Durant ($61 million), Giannis Antetokounmpo ($45 million) and Anthony Edwards ($39 million). The full comparison is in our ranking of the highest NBA salaries of 2026-27.

The Charlotte Hornets drafted him 11th overall in 2018 and traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers on draft night; the Clippers sent him to Oklahoma City in July 2019. His first four NBA salaries added up to $17.0 million. In August 2021 he signed a five-year rookie extension (Basketball-Reference lists it at $173 million), which has paid between $30.9 million and $40.8 million a season since 2022-23.

Adding Basketball-Reference’s season-by-season figures, his NBA salary comes to $196.3 million through 2026-27. The contracted seasons after that add $273.3 million, for $469.6 million across 13 seasons if he plays out the deal. Basketball-Reference counts $238.5 million of his remaining money as guaranteed, which does not include the final $75.6 million season.

The supermax and why its number moved

Gilgeous-Alexander agreed to a record four-year, $285 million extension with the Thunder on July 1, 2025. Basketball-Reference’s table now shows $273.3 million for those four seasons. The difference is not a renegotiation we can find reported. It follows from how the deal works: a supermax is set at 35% of the salary cap in its first season, so its dollar value depends on the cap. The cap rules are in our 2026-27 salary cap explainer.

The deal also shapes Oklahoma City’s books. With Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren also on new contracts, the Thunder already have $261.7 million committed for 2027-28, the most in the league, as our team payroll rankings show. The same front office extended Cason Wallace for $139 million this month.

The shoe deal

Gilgeous-Alexander signed with Converse in July 2020. He re-signed rather than leave when his first deal expired, and became creative director of Converse Basketball, a role that came with his own signature line. The first shoe, the SHAI 001, was released on September 4, 2025. On June 16, 2026, it was announced that he had left Converse for its parent company, Nike. The terms have not been reported, so we do not estimate them.

The résumé behind the money

  • 2025: MVP, scoring champion, Finals MVP and NBA champion, the fourth player to win MVP, Finals MVP and the scoring title in the same season, after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.
  • 2026: a second straight MVP.
  • Four All-Star selections and four All-NBA First Team selections.

Those facts are from Wikipedia’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander article. His first MVP made him eligible for the supermax, which is reserved for veterans who meet award criteria such as an MVP; he agreed to it weeks later.

What $90 million means

A $90 million estimate against $196 million of career salary looks low, and it is meant to be read with care. Salary figures are gross: players pay income tax and agents’ fees out of them, and about a fifth of that $196 million is this season’s salary, most of which has not been paid yet. Treat the $90 million as one outlet’s estimate. What is not an estimate is the contract: $273.3 million is scheduled to arrive from 2027-28 onward.

The bottom line

Gilgeous-Alexander is the clearest case in the NBA of pay lagging performance. He won two MVPs and a title while paid like a very good player, not the league’s best. That changes next season, when his salary rises by half to $61.0 million, and his net worth is likely to follow.

How much does Shai Gilgeous-Alexander make a year?

His 2026-27 salary is $40,806,150, per Basketball-Reference. Forbes' 2026 list of the highest-paid NBA players, published October 20, 2026, adds about $30 million in off-court earnings for a total of $70.8 million, tied for seventh in the league with Jimmy Butler.

How much is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's supermax contract?
